When it comes to hair styles for prom, there are so many
different options, you can change your color, add
highlights, add bangs, add layering and even add length or thickness with hair
extensions.
Preparing for prom night should begin months
ahead of time. Maybe you hair is
long or medium or short, curly or straight, fine or thick but you’ll still
probably want to do something different with it for your prom night. A prom
makeover includes a haircut and style, along with
makeup application. The total process can take around 4 hours to complete so
plan ahead (book an appointment with your
stylist no less than four hours before the limo arrives). For proms
and formal occasions you don't always have to go to a salon, but we suggest
doing so if you want an updo's or even a simple style. Remember they are
professionals and for the most part, know what their doing. If you need a hair stylist, begin asking for
recommendations in advance. If you have one already, make a special appointment
three months ahead to discuss your prom hairstyle. Don’t forget to
take pictures of the styles you want
so that they can follow it as close as possible you can immediately compare the
results. It is
recommended to bringing at least three photos of the prom hair style you want so your
stylist does not get confused.
Once you decided on a hairstyle for prom and color, discuss
with your stylist what it will take to get your hair to the hair style in the
photo chosen. Most of the time the exact cut and color are achieved in one day.
But girls that are growing their hair out may take several months and
appointments to reach their desired hair style. Human hair extensions are also an
option if you don’t want to wait for your hair to grow out.
If you are going to do your hair style yourself
or with the help of friends, straightening your hair before doing any styling
will make the styling easier, especially if you wish to have clean fresh curls.
Perms retexturize hair temporarily, adding volume, movement, body and wave to
your hair.
Nowadays perms are designed to last only 6 weeks. This way you can try out other
styles. If you need to add texture to your hairstyle,
traditionally, layering adds texture to any look. Shorter strands on longer ones
create an uneven surface, giving volume to styled hair. A shortcut to great
texture is adding slightly chopped ends or loose bangs to the cut. Unfliped ends
take on a subtle texture. Emphasize razor cut texture with texture creams or
tone down by flatiron. For a shine, blow-dry hair with a small amount of pomade.
Now apply a texture cream, into individual sections. If your hair is dry, run conditioner through
your hair to eliminate frizz. This really works and won't make your hair crispy
like hair spray. Remember to bring a
picture of the prom hairstyle you want, and know exactly what you are expecting.
Talk to the stylist to make sure there are no misunderstandings.
Very important:
Wear a button down shirt so you don't ruin all that hard work when you go to get
dressed.
Prom and
formal Hairstyles Tips
- Make a to-do list for the prom. Make another just
for your hair. Select a dress, jewelry, and hairstyle in that order,
coordinating everything.
- Try a complete dress rehearsal with hair, dress, and jewelry a month
before your prom. Finally, on the day before the prom collect all your
essentials in one place.
- The up dos has long been the mainstay for proms and
other special occasions, and it will never go out of style. You may opt for a
classic chignon, with hair pulled into a bun at the nape of your neck, or the
Juliet knot, with all of your hair arranged on top of your head. Whichever
variation you select, make sure it highlights your best features—gorgeous
eyes, full lips or well-defined cheekbones. If you opt for an updo
don't let it be uptight; avoid "librarian" styles with hair pulled
tight back. A bit of looseness around your face is usually more flattering.
- You can part your hair on top of your head to add
glamour to an ordinary hairstyle.
- For a timeless look, simply pull hair back
tightly and add some hair gloss. Add the right makeup, a great pair of
chandelier earrings and a delicate necklace, and you’re styling.
- If you want to experiment with color, several
products can give you a temporary boost—but be sure to test them a few weeks
before your prom to avoid any last-minute surprises. Use a color, which is one
tone lighter than your natural color. Cut small strands at the surface, twist
and apply color. Coil them on top of your head. You will get easy and quick
highlights. Color a strand underneath first to check the look.
- To look your best for the big night, don't risk
getting an outrageously funky hairstyle that simply doesn't work. Above all, select a dress, accessories and
hairstyle that make you feel comfortable and compliment your prom hairstyle. If
you feel insecure about any element, it’s time to revisit your plans. Follow
your instincts: If in doubt, there is no doubt just toss it out. Be sure that
your chosen hairstyle works for you.
- Hosting a pre-prom party where
your friends gather to help each
other with hair, makeup and nails could be a tremendous help in finding out what
looks good on you and what doesn't. If you’re on a tight budget, you can
adopt a do-it-yourself approach once you have a basic concept of what you want.
